Phonology[]
Inventory[]
Retla lost many distinctions Proto-Gigxkpoyan had. It lost the Ejective plosives, the Retroflex stops (fricatives are still distinguished).
Most substantial were its mergers, leaving it with only a five-vowel inventory.
Labial | Alveolar | Post-Alv. | Palatal | Velar | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Nasal | m | n | ŋ | ||
Plosive | p pʰ | t tʰ | k kʰ | ||
Fricative | f v | s z | ʂ ʐ* <ṣ ẕ> | x ɣ <ğ> | |
Approximant | w | ɹ <r> | j | ʁ** <ʀ> | |
Flap | ɾ <l> |
\*It is not known whether those were simply post-alveolar or retroflex. Direct reflexes of PG retroflexes.
\**ʁ seems to have been more often than not an approximant. It is uvular indeed, but i didn't feel like having another row just for it.
Front | Central | Back | |

High | i | u | |
High Mid | e | o | |
Low | a |
Stress[]
Stress was always word initial, just like that of PG.
Phonotactics[]
Retla's syllable structure can be described as (C)(C)(C)V(C)(C), neither onset or coda were obligatory. CC codas are quite rare. CCC onsets are also rare.
The most common syllable forms are CV CCV and CVC.
Distributional Quirks[]
- Codas containing plosives are quite rare
- Unstressed /e/ and /o/ are really rare. Original unstressed /e o/ merged with /i u/, but, under very specific circumstances, secondary instances of unstressed /e o/ emerged.
- /x/ only shows up as second place in clusters after aspirated plosives. (Original /x/ was deleted, but secondary /x/ arose from devoicing of /ʀ/ after aspirates).
